About

Kate Vartan graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2017 having gained a First in BA (Hons) Fashion Design with Marketing. Kate was the recipient of the prestigious 2017 Samsung Fashion and Design Award and presented her graduate collection in May 2017 at the Central Saint Martins press show.

The inspiration for Kate’s graduate collection, ‘Hole in One’, originated from her paternal grandmother and great-grandmother who both worked in male dominated environments. Kate’s great-grandmother was a county councillor in the 1950’s and her grandmother was the first female chairman of her golf club. They were both talented sportswomen. This collection is about preserving memories against the wider context of the lives of strong and independent women.

In an effort to preserve this legacy, Kate looked through her grandmothers belongings and selected some items that represented her life. This inspired Kate to develop a technique using striped and checked fabrics and casting them in a non-toxic resin. This technique gives both structure and strength to colour and texture.

Kate’s industry placement year, 2015/2016 was spent working for Marc Jacobs Intl. in New York and Christian Dior Couture in Paris.
